One note: In preparing our church profile, we created two versions: the Presbyterian online version, most of which can be found on the church website, and the UCC version, which is being used to circulate to candidates from our other denominations. If you’re interested in seeing the UCC profile, we are putting a copy in the church office annex and will also have copies at the back of the sanctuary. While their children were growing up, Arnie and Chris took an active part in many of their children’s activities. Chris taught Sunday school for a number of years, led a Cub Scout pack for two years, and cooked and cleaned for various youth events. Arnie coached soccer and basketball for over fifteen years. Although Chris was busy at home, she had a passion for raising healthy, competent young adults. She served for twelve years on the School Board, was active in Parent-Teacher Organizations, and volunteered at the Los Alamos public schools. She took a strong interest in the Developmental Assets Organization, which fostered the Family Strengths Network. Her devotion to a strong foundation in the pre-school years led Chris to accepting the position as Director of the Little Forest Playschool in 1990. As many of you know, she dedicates many hours a year to the Little Forest Resale and the Spring Fling not only to maintain an excellent quality of education for our preschoolers but also to provide a much needed and valued public service for young, growing families. Chris has always been active in her church. She taught adult Sunday school courses on parenting, was active in WCSS, and has served as Executive Board president for two years, past president for one, vice president for two and secretary for one. She also served on the Elders Board, Personnel Board, Women’s Retreat committee, and many other short term projects. In the community, she has been a part of the AAUW, serving as president for two years. She has been a member of the Los Alamos Rotary Club, a founding member of the LANL Foundation, and served on the Board of Little Forest Playschool from1977 until she took the job as Director. Arnie Sierk has also been devoted to serving his Church. He taught adult Sunday school classes, served on the Finance Board during the 1990’s, and was part of two search committees. He also served on an adhok committee to investigate the financial situation at the church. Currently, he’s a member of the youth search committee and is serving his final year of three on the Elders Board. His community service includes twenty years on the Golf Course Pool Association and several years on the Casa Mesita Board of Directors. He and Chris have pledged to help with the mid-high and senior high youth group until a youth leader is found. Says Chris, “George Easley didn’t let the older members of the church off the hook. He believed that they should do more because they had more time. We aren’t letting ourselves off the hook either”. Their daughter Kim serves in a church in Albuquerque that is alive with youth. Attending that church occasionally has proven to Chris and Arnie the importance of having the youth remain a visible and integral part of the church family. The youth have enriched their daughter’s church tremendously. Says Arnie, “We need to take ownership of the youth in our church. We’ve professionalized everything. Instead of taking the responsibility for teaching them, we think we’ll just hire someone, but the world doesn’t work on that scale. We have to get out and volunteer to make things happen. We all make the community run, paid or not. It doesn’t matter what you volunteer to do. Even small projects improve the quality of life for everyone, the church, the community, the world.” Get out there and do things with your children, and for your children. Then, help with other people’s children. By

For many years of my adult life I thought of giving to the church
Then one day my teen-aged daughter gave me a half eaten candy
It didn’t bother me that I didn’t get something nice from her. What
My hurt from that experience caused me to take a long, hard look
That’s all changed now. I’ve grown up in my giving. I now make
