The Gift of Music

I wish to see all arts, principally music,
in the service of Him who gave and created them.

Music is a fair and glorious give from God.
I would not for the world forego my
humble share of music.
Singers are never sorrowful, but are merry
and they smile through their trouble
in song.

 Music makes people kinder, gentler,
more staid and reasonable.
I am persuaded that after theology there is
no art that can be placed on a level
with music; for besides theology,
music is the only art capable of affording
peace and joy of heart…the devil
flees before the sound of music almost
as much as before the
Word of God.

From The Senior Pastor Search Committee
Over the last couple of months, the Senior Pastor Search Committee has received over 90 candidates from our denominational offices, as well as in response to the ads that we placed in The Christian Century and Christianity Today, two publications with national circulation.  We are currently reading those profiles in order to create a “long list” -those candidates with whom we will continue theconversation.  This is a very time consuming but exciting process, as we read about many wonderful ministries.  We appreciate the input that we’ve gotten from many of you.  Please feel free to talk to anyone on the committee if you have questions or input, and as always, keep praying for us and for our church.

One note:  In preparing our church profile, we created two versions:  the Presbyterian online version, most of which can be found on the church website, and the UCC version, which is being used to circulate to candidates from our other denominations.  If you’re interested in seeing the UCC profile, we are putting a copy in the church office annex and will also have copies at the back of the sanctuary.

Committee Members:  Sandie Berner, Greg Boebinger, Mary Freese (Chair), Altana Gray, Jerry Grindstaff, Paul Mutschlecner, and Jennifer Schmierer.

April Sunday Worship Themes

April  4th  Palm Sunday. This is a glorious day to worship God!  Howard will be preaching on “Heralds and Followers”. This message will be based on Luke 19:28-40. Were the crowds that followed Jesus fickle? What else was going on here? How can we grow in making Christ Lord in our lives?
April 11th  Easter Arrives! At 6:00 a.m. we will join an ecumenical sunrise service at Ashley Pond. “The Lord is Risen Indeed!” Services at our church will be at 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.. Howard will be preaching on the experiences of “Two Mary's and Joanna” on that first Easter Day. His text is Luke 24:1-12. Christians can discover evidence of our risen Lord and share in that hope. Come and find out how.
April 18th  2nd Sunday of Easter!  A contemporary celebration of Easter and Rev. Logan’s message is “Peace & Doubt, Doubt & Peace.”  The scripture text is John 20: 19-31.
April 25th  Our Mexico Mission trip 2004 will be the theme of this worship service.

Members of the Month
Arnie and Chris Sierk moved to Los Alamos in 1977.  Arnie worked in the Lab’s Theoretical Division as a Nuclear Physicist and Chris stayed home to raise their three children, Mike, Brian, and Kim.  They joined the United Church on Palm Sunday in 1980.

While their children were growing up,  Arnie and Chris took an active part in many of their children’s activities.  Chris taught Sunday school for a number of years, led a Cub Scout pack for two years, and cooked and cleaned for various youth events.  Arnie coached soccer and basketball for over fifteen years.

Although Chris was busy at home, she had a passion for raising healthy, competent young adults.  She served for twelve years on the School Board, was active in Parent-Teacher Organizations, and volunteered at the Los Alamos public schools.  She took a strong interest in the Developmental Assets Organization, which fostered the Family Strengths Network.  Her devotion to a strong foundation in the pre-school years led Chris to accepting the position as Director of the Little Forest Playschool in 1990.  As many of you know, she dedicates many hours a year to the Little Forest Resale and the Spring Fling not only to maintain an excellent quality of education for our preschoolers but also to provide a much needed and valued public service for young, growing families.

Chris has always been active in her church.  She taught adult Sunday school courses on parenting, was active in WCSS, and has served as Executive Board president for two years, past president for one, vice president for two and secretary for one.  She also served on the Elders Board, Personnel Board, Women’s Retreat committee, and many other short term projects.

In the community, she has been a part of the AAUW, serving as president for two years.  She has been a member of the Los Alamos Rotary Club, a founding member of the LANL Foundation, and served on the Board of Little Forest Playschool from1977 until she took the job as Director.

Arnie Sierk has also been devoted to serving his Church.  He taught adult Sunday school classes, served on the Finance Board during the 1990’s, and was part of two search committees. He also served on an adhok committee to investigate the financial situation at the church.

Currently, he’s a member of the youth search committee and is serving his final year of three on the Elders Board.  His community service includes twenty years on the Golf Course Pool Association and several years on the Casa Mesita Board of Directors.

He and Chris have pledged to help with the mid-high and senior high youth group until a youth leader is found.  Says Chris, “George Easley didn’t let the older members of the church off the hook.  He believed that they should do more because they had more time.  We aren’t letting ourselves off the hook either”.  Their daughter Kim serves in a church in Albuquerque that is alive with youth.  Attending that church occasionally has proven to Chris and Arnie the importance of having the youth remain a visible and integral part of the church family.  The youth have enriched their daughter’s church tremendously.  Says Arnie, “We need to take ownership of the youth in our church.  We’ve professionalized everything.  Instead of taking the responsibility for teaching them, we think we’ll just hire someone, but the world doesn’t work on that scale.  We have to get out and volunteer to make things happen.  We all make the community run, paid or not.  It doesn’t matter what you volunteer to do.  Even small projects improve the quality of life for everyone, the church, the community, the world.”

Get out there and do things with your children, and for your children.  Then, help with other people’s children.

How I Grew Up in My Giving
Below I share with you some life changing words:

How I Grew Up in My Giving

For many years of my adult life I thought of giving to the church
much like children handle their allowance. I’d take care of all the goodies
I craved first and if there was anything left over, I’d place it in the
offering.

Then one day my teen-aged daughter gave me a half eaten candy
bar for my birthday. She said she’d spent all her money, and that was all
she had left.

It didn’t bother me that I didn’t get something nice from her. What
concerned me was that I had never taught her about priorities. Her gift
to me was an after-though, a leftover. I wasn’t important enough in her
life to be placed ahead of all the silly things she spent her money on.

My hurt from that experience caused me to take a long, hard look
at my own relationship with God. I had pretty much squeezed God out of
my life except on Sundays. God’s work was not a priority in my life. I
gave God whatever I had left.

That’s all changed now. I’ve grown up in my giving. I now make
the Lord a top priority in my budget instead of insulting God with my leftovers.

-- Author Unknown, quoted in The Visitor of the First Christian Church
                  in Burlington, CO, March, 2004

May our love of God and our service to God grow day by day.

In Christ’s Spirit,

                                 Howard
