Los Alamos Rotary Club - Deborah Beene Music Scholarship
Awards
This year's Deborah Beene Music Scholarship first place
winner is David Hodgson, playing the tuba. David was
awarded $1,000. Accompanied by Sarah Kelly on the
piano, David played Concerto for Tuba by R. Vaughn
Williams, and Air and Bourree by J. S. Bach. Audrey
Walstrom, soprano, was awarded the second place prize of
$500. Accompanied by Cindy Little on the piano, Audrey
sang Cuatros Madrigals Amatorias by Joaquin Rodrigo, and
Nuit d'Etoiles by Claude Debussy.
The Los Alamos Rotary Club sponsors annually the Deborah
Beene Music Scholarship competition. Sarah and Donald
Beene established the Scholarship in 1973 by in memory of
their daughter Deborah, a promising musician who died in
1972. An endowment, along with contributions by the Los
Alamos National Bank, the Los Alamos Rotary Club, and
individual contributions comprise the award money each
year. This year's competition was held in May, and the
free recital will be held at Fuller Lodge on Wednesday,
June 20th at 7:00 pm. The public is invited to attend and
hear these talented young musicians and other previous
winners of the competition. Light refreshments will be
served.
Rotary Club members Ed Van Eeckhout and Brian Newnam are
organizers of the competition and the June 20 concert.

David was selected as the principal tuba player at both
the 2001 and 2000 New Mexico All State Music Festival,
and the only tuba in the New Mexico All State Symphonic
Orchestra. He was also selected as the first chair tuba
in both 2001 and 2000 Greater Southwest Honor Band,
including musicians from New Mexico and southwest Texas.
David studied at the Brevard Music Institute, the
Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Texas Tech
University Summer Music Camp. He also has participated in
band and ensemble performances.
Audrey Walstrom
In addition to her vocal talent, Audrey enjoys playing
the piano and violin. She has participated in the
District Honor Choir, Solo and Ensemble, the National
Association of Teachers of Singing, All State Choir, Pro
Coro Youth choir and New Mexico Pro Coro as the 2001
soprano student apprentice. Audrey has also performed
with the Los Alamos Light Opera and the Los Alamos High
School Olions. She hopes to continue her vocal studies in
college and to sing with the Santa Fe Opera one day.
