Next Big Idea: Festival of Discovery, Invention, and Innovation is a fun-filled event that highlights Los Alamos' unique creative heritage while providing an opportunity for inspiring young people from throughout the state about possible futures in science, technology, engineering, math, and innovation.  The weekend of family friendly events (at a cool, 7500 feet) is designed to educate, illuminate, inspire, and entertain by celebrating discoveries, inventions, ideas, and innovations in science, technology, arts, food, and music

STEM Student Day featuring
  • Special tour of the Bradbury Science Museum
  • Small group interactions with scientists, inventors, and innovators
  • Lunch
  • Tours
  • Special presentation: the grand challenges ahead
Saturday, July 18th -- Next Big Idea Festival featuring
  • Showcase of Ideas:  Exhibits by scientists, inventors, and innovators will showcase some of New Mexico's most exciting new ideas, discoveries, inventions, and innovations!
  • Hands-on activities area
  • Live entertainment throughout the festival
  • The Next Big Show:  Innovative Performance

How do you sign up to participate?

Anyone may participate in the events on Saturday, July 18th.  No pre-registration is required.  Pre-registration is required to participate in the STEM Student Day activities on Friday, July 17th.

Chambers of Commerce throughout New Mexico are participating by sponsoring students from their area to attend.  Sponsorships typically will cover hotel costs for the student and their parent(s), gas allowance, lunch on Friday, and the registration fee.  To find out if your area Chamber is participating, you can call them and ask them.  Have them contact the Los Alamos Chamber at 505-662-8105 if they want more information.  Alternately, you can inquire with us by completing an online form ( click here ) and we will make inquiries for you and get back to you.

The registration deadline for STEM Student Day participation is June 15, 2009.  There is limited availability to participate and registrations will be processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
